The erotic in art at the simplest level will usually refer to love making between two people of the opposite sex. However, in another reference, the sexual relationship between novitiates and temple priests as an attempt to communicate with a god exists in all early and some contemporary religions. Maria's paintings in this category, erotic art, depict the various levels of communication and the primitive rituals associated with them such as the Bacchanalian mythical and historical rites of Spring in ancient Greece, Mardi Gras or Carnival celebrations. Rites of initiation in Santeria and voodoo relate to primitive rites practiced in ancient and modern times in Africa. These ancient primitive rites practiced today Maria believes, enables the ancient religion to survive, despite the cannibalism of the culture by the early explorers.
