The Doors

Livermore Civic Library, CA..

This work is divided into four conjoining circles. The slides portray the two central circles. Number one is a scene depicting divine love and enlightenment. Circle two, illustrates the search for enlightenment. The words read, trails, suffering, courage etc. They are illustrated with appropriate figures such as Gandhi, Jonah etc. The words around the circle are from Dante's Divine Comedy, "we were not made to live like beasts but to follow knowledge and truth.. Also included are William Blake's immortal words describing enlightenment, "when the doors of perception are cleansed all things will appear as they are, infinite". The largest circle divides the world into main geographic areas such as Africa, Asia, Europe etc. Within these areas are illustrations of the culture as well as the influence of that culture on artists, explorers, scientists etc. Therefore in Africa, there would be Egypt, Anwar Sadat as a sphinx, opening up the complete world of Israel and Islam if one wants to pursue it.The words and the quotes along with the esthetics of the work is designed to engage the viewer at the basic esthetic level to the intellectual and spiritual levels if the viewer takes advantage of the vast wealth of material that the library has to offer. in other words the viewer is encouraged to interact with the work at their highest level of interest.
