Primitive Painting |
||
Surreal ....cont'd$1800 each or $5000 for the set. In Miami Maria became engrossed with the iconography of the Afro-Caribbean culture. These three paintings illustrate the enlightenment of the initiate who absorbs the spirit that is mounted on his head by the voodoo priest (ess). Although it appears more simplistic in the concept of enlightenment, the complicated rituals, dancing, and chanting speak of a complex society, advanced and sophisticated in the personification of the mysteries as any culture in any time. It is particularly remarkable that this ancient culture still exists despite the cruelty of the slave traders and owners, in a form that varies only slightly from the original culture of West Africa. It is gaining in strength and has a strong appeal for Anglos who have sought answers to the mysteries in the religions of Asia. |

The
Celebration |
| In
the first painting the initiate is cleansed and prepared for the spirits
that will be summoned by dance, sacrifice and chanting. Painting Two illustrates
the crowning of the new priestess and in Painting Three, based on the myths
of Marie Laveau, she rises from the water to celebrate with her following.
Marie Laveau , the memorable New Orleans priestess, incorporated the African
mysteries and the Catholic mysteries much in the same way that Santeria
does.
